Video Essays

Since 2019, I’ve expanded my research and dramaturgy work through a YouTube channel – “And Now, They Sing” – where I discuss and investigate the history of the performing arts. Across more than two dozen videos and counting, I’ve had the chance to interview some legendary artists, uncover stories for the very first time, and build a reputation for quality over quantity. This page highlights some of the videos I am most proud of, while the full channel can be found at the button just below.

THE INTOXICATING NOSTALGIA OF “THE DROWSY CHAPERONE” (2022)

What begins as script analysis of the role of Man-In-Chair slowly balloons into a larger conversation about the role of nostalgia in the theatre, how we forgive works that have aged, and the difference between enjoying a work of art and endorsing it.

This video was endorsed by bookwriter (and original Man-In-Chair) Bob Martin, and cited by theatre historian Margaret Hall in her 2023 TED Talk about nostalgia in the performing arts.

THE (DIS)COMFORT OF NUNSENSE (2023)

A deep look into the seven musicals in Dan Goggin’s “Nunsense” series – the odd lore that builds up across the pieces, as well as the show’s coded messages about what constitutes “apolitical” and “comforting” theatre. Featuring an exclusive interview with Dan Goggin himself.

SHEN YUN WANTS TO CLARIFY THE TRUTH (2022)

A deeper look at the dance sensation that has taken over America’s billboards, the video looks not just as the spiritual practice Falun Gong, which runs Shen Yun, but also how dance as a medium becomes an effective tool for convincing an audience to trust you – or not.

THE EVOLUTION OF FORD’S THEATRE (2023)

A two-part video about the famed theatre where Lincoln was shot, the first video (linked here) deals with the history from 1865 to the 21st century, covering the theatre’s demolition and subsequent rebirth under producer Frankie Hewitt. Part 2 deals with the Ford’s Theatre of today, featuring an exclusive interview with staff member José Carrasquillo about the challenges of programming in such a portentous space.

RANDY FELTFACE: SUSPENDED DISBELIEF (2022)

Touching on themes of authenticity in stand-up comedy, this discussion of the Australian comedian Randy Feltface covers his evolution as a character, and the unique combination of trust that his comedy asks of the audience. Far and away, the most popular video on the channel.
